Have a Zoom call coming up and need a super simple but fun craft to keep your kids entertained for awhile? If so, give this easy rock art craft for kids a try.
Bonus: The result is really pretty!
My daughter and I did this together and I enjoyed making them too! I love crafts and DIY that are great for kids and parents.
Materials Needed
It doesn’t get any better than this because all you need are 3 things:
- Rocks
- Paint
- String
Instructions
Say This: Hey kids! I’ve got a call coming up so go find some rocks, paint them (or not) and then tie this string around them. Do about 25 and then I should be done.
OK, kidding. Well, kind of… because that’s pretty much it.
There are a few tips to help make it super easy so keep reading for step-by-step directions.
Step 1 – Collect Rocks
Tip: The easiest rocks to wrap are ones that are a bit longer and flatter (versus round).
Step 2 – Paint The Rocks
Alternative: Don’t paint the rocks. Whatever works for you!
You’ll see in the pictures that some are painted and some are not. My favourites are actually the ones that are not painted because they look a bit more natural and not so much like Easter eggs. But, if you’re looking for an Easter craft, this is a perfect option!
We used bottles of Acrylic paint from a dollar store but to keep it simple, just use whatever paint your kids have on hand.
Tip: I buy flannel backed table cloths from the dollar store to lay out on the floor for these types of painting crafts and for my own DIY adventures when I’m working in the house.
Step 3 – Wrap the Rock in Colourful String
We used crafting string to wrap the rocks, some from Michaels and some from a dollar store, as shown in the pictures. However, you can use yarn, cord, thread (although harder for little hands), or anything else you have that would work.

Tip: The hardest part about this craft is tying the knot around the rock to start and finish. It is easier to wrap the rock if the knot is tied tight so depending on how old your kids are, they may need a hand with this.

Step 4 – Admire
They are so pretty! Check them out…
And that’s it. An easy rock art craft for kids that is super simple and really cute. You really can’t mess this up because an unpainted rock wrapped in just one colour looks great too.

I like them so much, I put one here! Why not?!
