Since I can’t actually live outside, and I don’t have a glass house, I like to feel like there’s a little bit of the outdoors in every room.
Sunshine, fresh air, nature, trees, blue sky… all of these things are so good for our well-being and it can be particularly hard to stay connected to them when the winter months set in.

By incorporating a few natural home decor items into your home, you can be reminded of all-things-not-snowy-and-cold, and find some comfort in nature, regardless of the weather.
Natural home decor will also make your spaces feel more cozy, warm and welcoming. Perfect.
So, as winter quietly approaches, now is the perfect time to make a few small changes that will connect you to nature and bring you comfort all year long.
#1 Plants
Having plants in your home is one of the best ways to bring your space to life. I try to have at least one plant in every main room. If trying to keep a plant alive terrifies you, just google “plants that are hard to kill” and you’ll find lots of recommendations.
Succulents are also super popular now and one of the reasons for this is that they are very low maintenance and they have a minimalist look.
Here are a few plants I have kept alive with ease and why I love them.
Ferns. Ferns are just so big and leafy, and I love their emerald green hue. I bought this gigantic fern over a year ago from Home Depot and it’s still growing strong. I love how it looks in my sunroom.

Yucca. I bought this plant because it reminds me of palm trees in Florida on the March break. By the time March arrives, I’m craving fresh cut grass and warm sunshine, so this is a little reminder of tropical days when it’s really not very tropical outside.

Succulents. If you are looking for low maintenance plants that are great for small spaces, succulents are perfect.

This mirror with shelf sat empty for months because I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for to display on it. Then, not long ago I walked into Home Depot and found these cute little things. I water them with a medicine dropper. It kind of feels like I am feeding a little bird or something. They are so simple and fresh looking and I love them.

I’m also a bit fascinated by the idea of an air plant like the one in the picture so it’s on my to do list to learn a bit more about them and give one a go.

#2 Wall Art
Wall art is another really easy way to bring some nature into your home. When I pick out art, I just go with what I love and what feels right. I think everyone should have one picture they love in every room.
Here are a few of my favourite pictures that remind me of nature…

So if you’re looking for natural home decor, just look for pictures of landscapes, nature, living things, etc. You also don’t have to spend a lot of money. In fact, my daughter loves to paint and the price point for her art is very reasonable. 🙂
#3 Choose Natural-Looking Wood Finishes
I recall reading something many years ago about how to select wood finishes for your home and I’ve always remembered it. The advice was to use the outdoors as your guide – you can achieve a natural look if you choose wood finishes that look like the trees you see outside your window. Sticking with these shades will make the furniture and decor in your home feel more restful and warm.

Of course if you are looking for a modern and sleek look, high gloss wood finishes in darker and richer colours are a great choice but they just won’t make this list of natural home decor ideas. It all depends on the feeling you want your home to have. I talk about this idea a bit more in 7 Tips on How to Choose Paint Colours For Your Home.
Keep in mind that choosing wood finishes can be tricky. You don’t want to mix and match too much. For example, a high gloss mahogany finish doesn’t work well with a grey-brown barn board finish. However, you do want a bit of variety in your wood elements so having different shades of a similar stain/colour works well.
#4 Incorporate a Variety of Natural Materials in Your Decor
There are sooooo many warm and natural materials that you can incorporate into your home to make it feel like you have summer days at your fingertips even when the snow is swirling just outside your window.

This idea brings the most fun for me because I love a little road trip to Home Sense with a pit stop at Starbuck’s.
As I look around me right now, there are many little things that I see that add texture, warmth and a touch of nature to each room. This is definitely one of the ways that I make my home my happy place!

Here are some natural materials and home decor items that I love.
- Concrete planters
- Wood mantels
- Bamboo shades
- Cotton and knit blankets
- Linen lamp shades
- Dried flowers
- Wicker baskets

#5 Window Coverings
Quite simply, let the sunshine in! Now, if it’s a heatwave in mid-summer I give you a pass on this but otherwise, open those curtains.
There are actually many benefits of embracing natural light. For example, according to Shining Light on What Natural Light Does to Your Body, benefits of natural light include boosting levels of vitamin D, helping you sleep better, and improving your mood.
So if you’re interested in natural home decor, don’t overlook your window treatments. Keep window coverings minimal and incorporate only what you need and/or what you love.
I really like the natural look of bamboo blinds or cellular shades and both have a very minimalist look. On many of my windows this is all I have. However, I also like how these types of blinds look with airy curtains because they can soften the look of a room and make the window look bigger.
Tip: Always hang curtains high and wide.
Check your gardens too!
Letting natural light into your home is also much easier if you don’t have overgrown shrubbery in front of your windows. Take a little walk around your home and if you have greenery blocking your windows, consider trimming it so that the light can find its way inside.
I confess that when I drive by homes with overgrown greenery blocking windows, it’s all I can do to not pull in the driveway and take it upon myself to do a little gardening. I’m not sure that stranger gardening is a thing though.
So create your happy place this fall so that when the winter does arrive, the sun still shines in, the plants are still green and leafy, and you’ve got a little bit of nature in every room!
Oh and don’t forget, browsing a home store with a cup of coffee or tea in hand, is a perfect mini road trip.
