Self-Care Kit – The Perfect Gift to Give!

A few months ago I posted another of my favourite articles to Gravel Road Living, 13 Self-Care Ideas That Are Easy and Free.  While I was writing the article, I began brainstorming a list of fun things that you could include in a self-care package for a busy friend, sister, mom or grandma.

I’m in the middle of putting some things together myself right now and wanted to share a few of my favourites with everyone.

And if you’re looking for a more complete list of ideas, check out the list below – there is something there for everyone!

But… before I share my finds and the list, here’s a few thoughts on why self-care packages are the best!

3 Reasons Why a Self-Care Kit Makes a Perfect Gift

Reason #1 – Self-Care is Needed Now More Than Ever

Let’s be honest, 2020 has been super stressful!  We have all just been doing what we can and even with the best of intentions, taking time for self-care often becomes a low priority.  However, the stress and impact on our mental health is very real and creating a self-care basket for a friend will encourage them to be extra kind to themselves.

Reason #2 – A Self-Care Kit is Personal and Unique

A self-care basket reminds me a bit of the subscription boxes that I have seen advertised, only this is more personal and special because it’s created especially by one friend for another.  You can select unique items that you know someone will love.  If you think of your self-care kit as a big hug (or a high five if you’re not the hugging type), then you can’t go wrong with what you put inside!

Reason #3 – You Can Buy Local and Support Small Businesses

Creating your own self-care kit for someone will give you the opportunity to buy local and support small businesses who have struggled with the challenges that 2020 has presented.  Often it’s these little stores and markets that have the absolute best products in them because they feature local artisans and makers from the community.  And I do love a mini road trip to browse in these shops!

Here’s a little tour of a self-care package that I’m working on and I am in love with what’s inside!  Almost everything is from local small businesses and I’ve enjoyed browsing and picking out some favourite things.

I know I’ve mentioned many times on my blog that I’m in love with plaid scarves. The colours in this one are beautiful, it is soft and warm, and it supports my sister’s online Silver Icing clothing business. I love the look of the scarf lining the basket instead of tissue paper.

A friend has an amazing pottery studio and storefront that really lives up to its name – Zenfire.  She is incredibly talented and her store is filled with beautiful, hand-crafted pottery and it definitely has a feeling of peace and relaxation.

Holiday Blend Coffee Treehuggers Tree Farm
Right around the corner is a warm and rustic shop filled with original and hand-crafted products. It is tucked away in the back of a tree farm and it is as welcoming and unique on the outside as it is on the inside.

The smell when you walk into this store is unmatched!  They bring in cacao beans from exotic locations and make the most incredible chocolate on site.

Well, since I’m sharing my local finds for my self-care basket, I may as well share a few other gifts I’ve picked up along the way!

For the Wine Lover

Appleland is a local family-owned apple orchard, family farm and gift shop.  We’ve been going there since my kids were toddlers to pick apples, ride the train and eat apple turnovers.  It’s one of my favourite fall destinations.

For the Clark Griswold Lover 🙂

Although you may not live near these particular small businesses, I’m sure there are many lovely shops and markets near you that are just as perfect for favourite finds.
